Tappan oven made by Frigidaire

The rubber seal between the oven and the door has dissintegrated, We have one of the 3 lengths intact, but beginning to crack. The replacement part has been discontinued and no dimensions are offered for a common part. I am hoping you can inform us of how we can repair this and answer some safety concerns.

When I reported this to my land lord, he wanted to glue the rubber pieces back in. First of all, they are cracked and crumbled and no longer functional. Second of all, isn't glue flammable and wouldn't this risk a fire? On looking at the oven there are actually slots for these rubber strips to attach into. If only we can find a comparable part? Do you have any suggestions? I assume I would need to measure the spaces between the attachment slots. Would it be safe to use another part with a similar length, width and thickness? Are there any concerns about the material being different and not designed for that specific oven?

Also, I have used the oven twice now without this seal. Much heat escapes. The door itself and the knobs for the range control get very hot and I need to be careful not to touch them while the oven is on. I'm afraid we might be using a significant amount more of gas for the oven and then the kitchen gets so hot we need more cooling. I've experienced these concerns firsthand. Are there any additional concerns of using the oven without the door seal? Is it a fire hazard? Should I not be using it at all until it is repaired? Or is it safe with some precautions taken like being aware of the heat of the door?

Please tell me your recommendations. Wanting to be able to cook safely.

Much appreciation,
Liz

Liz,

We're going to need your assistance or the landlords, so we can assist you in getting some door gaskets for your range. We were able to determine which style gaskets you need, now we need to know the length(s) needed to verify availability. We will need for you to measure the length between the mounting slots in the oven front flange, and we can handle it from there.

Thanks,

Smile Thank you! Here are the specs for the oven door gaskets:

  1. Top (Horizontal): 19 -1/16" from inside end of left slot to inside end of right slot.
  2. Sides Lt & Rt (vertical): 14 -2/16" between slots.
  3. TOTAL of 3 gasket strips needed: 1 top and 2 sides
  • Mounting slots are 1/4" wide.
  • The original gasket strips were shorter and stretched to mount.
    • Only one side strip maintains its length and measures 13-1/4" long un-stretched.
    • Its width is approx. 7/16" at the outfacing flap and 5/16" on its inside surface that makes contact with the oven.
    • It appears to be about 1/8" thick.
    • Material appears to be rubber.
    • Color is dark gray.
Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it. Cooking has been extremely hot here without air conditioning and so much heat escaping!

NaturalMomma,

Here are some part numbers that should work on your range.
They are an inch or so shorter than the dimensions you gave, but they will stretch to fit.

You will need (2) for the side seals,

Part number: 7212P004-60

Part number: 7212P004-60

And (1) for the top seal,

Part number: AP4090589

Part number: AP4090589

These parts are available at this time. They are a silicone compound, not rubber, so you may want to warm them in hot water or with a blow dryer, before you install them on the range.

Thanks and Good Luck,
