Our GE Monogram 5 burner gas cook top has developed a problem with the ignitors. The large, front right burner will ignite, but the ignitor keeps sparking. Also, the ignitors of the two adjacent small burners will spark also, at the same time, even though only the front burner is lit.

Please advise the best course of action to correct. I understand that there are several components in the ignitor circuit. (spark module, spark ignitor switches, and the ignitor located in the burner)

Thanks for your help

Joseph,

Remove the burner cap from the front right burner and inspect the burner igniter. The metal part of the igniter should not be bend and should be point to the center of the burner. If it's not then the igniter has to be replaced. Also the burner itself and the burner cap should be completely dry.

- The part number for the burner igniter is AP2020590

If the igniter has to be replaced be careful not to damage the igniter mounting clip because this part is no longer available.

Pull up the knob for the front right burner and check the switch cam. The middle hole can be worn out.

P.S. All burner igniters are on the same circuit what means they all will spark together when any of the knobs has been turned "on".

Gene,
Thanks for the advice. I'll try the igniter replacement tomorrow.

If the top metal part of the igniter is not moving inside the ceramic insulation, pointed to the center of the burner and ceramic is not cracked then most likely there is nothing wrong with the igniter. Check all the igniters. Make sure the burners and the burner caps are clean and dry, and all caps are in the correct position. Post the results.

I checked all the ignitors. The one on the front, right burner is loose. I have a new ignitor, but cannot find a way to gain access to it. How do I gain access to the ignitor?

Thank you for your assitance.

You have to remove the cook top from the counter, turn it upside down, remove the screws holding the bottom panel and remove the panel.
