We have a Whirlpool built in electric oven. When we set the oven temp, it goes for about a 30-60 seconds then shuts off again. If we keep repeating the process while watching the display, we can sometimes get it going. But to do this you have to keep reseting the temp over an over again. This goes on for quite some time (about 30 mins) with the temp gradually rising. after it gets to a certain point (temperature i guess) it continues on like nothing was wrong.
Is this a thermal sensor problem or something?

Thanks
Jef

Jef,

Most likely the problem is a bad control board. The model number you posted is incorrect. Verify and repost it.

Gene.

Hey Thanks Gene!
I re-checked the model # but I got it right the first time. 278 4038893
About how much would that part run an could I do it myself (i'm pretty good at fixin things). Or is it even worth fooling with? Or maybe it's time for a new oven $$$$$$$
Thanks Again for your responce.

Your part number looks like a Sears format

If I look up 278 it says the unit is a Roper but was made by GE not Whirlpool

Here is some info on checking the temp sensor
http://www.applianceaid.com/oven_temp_sensors_help.html

Though it does sound more like a control board problem as Gene said, it is probably worth checking this out. Also look for a bad or dirty connection of the sensor.

Sensor $67.00 approx.
Board $235.00 approx.
