I attempted to preheat my GE Profile--set the temperature etc--the oven did not start. The burners and clock etc still work. Is this something we can fix ourselves? Is it costly? Thanks for your help!

Karen,

You most likely have a weak or broken glow bar igniter on the bake burner,

Part number: AP2014008
Part number: AP2014008

It's not very costly, and a somewhat easy repair with basic handtools.

You may want to check the Broil Burner, for ignition and flame, to be more positive.

You will need to remove the oven bottom panel and flame spreader from the burner tube to observe the igniter operation,(removing the oven door, is a good idea as well).

Program a Bake cycle and observe the "glow bar" igniter operation,

It should glow a very bright "white hot" color in 30 to 45 seconds and ignite the gas and have a flame in 60 seconds.

If it glows Orange, or not at all, then it is weak or broken and not openning the gas valve for the gas to ignite.

Good Luck,

:) :) :)

How do you remove the bottom of the oven? Are there drawings of our particular oven model somewhere?

Karen,

There are two screws on the oven bottom at the back wall, that need to be removed, then you can carefully raise and remove the bottom panel.

We removed the bottom panel and performed the test and the oven did ignite as you described. We put the panel back on and attempted to heat it to 375. It heated. Any idea why it appears to be working now?

I really feel that the oven is taking a lot longer to respond than it did before, but maybe I'm remembering wrong.

Karen,

I still believe you have a weak igniter,

Unless there was a loose connection in the wiring.

If or when the problem, returns, order and install the igniter.

As the igniter circuit weakens, the more intermittent the ignition and temperature will become.

Good Luck,
