Default Oven and broiler won't turn on
Model Number: GS563LXSB 0   Brand: Whirlpool   Age: 1 - 5 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com
This range has worked fine for over 3 years. We use the oven a lot, the broiler not often. Last evening after using the stove for several things, then the broiler very briefly, both of them stopped working. The "Preheat" display comes on, then you hear the loud click (which I assume is an electronic valve), then instead of hearing the burners ignite, you get another loud click, no ignition. The stovetop burners all work. I unplugged the range and left it unplugged all night hoping something would re-set, but no luck.

The drawings on line look to me like there are separate spark igniters for the oven and the broiler, so it's hard to see how they could both go down at the same instant, right? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Following up on my own question here, I found a document online titled Whirlpool Gas Range Direct Spark Ignition System, which applies to this range. I got a multimeter, followed the directions in the document. Seemingly this procedure indicated this Spark Ignition Module, which does turn on both the broiler igniter and the bake (oven) igniter, was bad. Then, just to be thorough, I tested the double solenoid which is part of the electronic Gas Distribution Valve which runs gas to the bake burners and the broil burners. The broil terminal was dead. This manual says if one is dead, neither will operate. The solenoid is tested when it is disconnected from the oven. The solenoid IS connected when you test the spark ignition system. So, me tester showed two problems, and for either one, the manual says replace it.

But, it's hard to believe both parts went bad at the same timel So, I hope the gas distribution valve solenoid is the whole problem. Anyway, I going to replace that first, and see what happens

But, if I'm on the wrong course here, please feel free to let me know. Thanks

Default Problem solved, apparently.

Following up yet again: the new Gas Distribution Valve worked. Both oven and broiler function normally. It's approx. $90 plus shipping for the new one; not a big deal to install. Don't do it yourself unless you have experience working with gas fittings, etc. From these types of websites, it sounds to me like this problem typically turns out to be the spark igniter module (or 'board' or whatever it's called), but this is better, the valve is a good bit less money.

Just wanted to say thank you for sharing your diagnosis and repair with us. It is much often we see a failed gas valve/regulator than a failed spark module and this is very common mistake done by DUI people. So your post was very illuminative and instructive.

Thanks again and good luck with your range.

Gene.

Default valve

So is the gas distribution valve the same thing as a regulator valve?
