You have to remove (unscrew) all top burners. Remove the screws under each burner and lift up the top panel. - The ERC (aka a clock/timer) Part number: AP4009001

Okay, so I finally got to try this, but there must be something more to undo 'cause the top doesn't budge! Perhaps some clips at the front?

Yes. Using a putty knife, push in the locking clip on each side under the top panel.
