Default One Thermador igniter switch malfunction
Model Number: PRG486GLUS   Brand: Thermador   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

On this model, when any burner is started, I first hear a faint click from the left hand side of the range, and then all of the igniters will spark. My right front burner is malfunctioning intermittently. When I try to start the RF burner, I will hear that faint click, but then NO igniters will spark.

However, if I turn on the RF burner, and then try to light a different burner, when they all spark, the RF burner also sparks and lights.

Before hearing that initial faint click from the left, I thought it might be a bad wire or a bad spark switch. But now, hearing the faint click from the left, I'm not so sure.

Thanks.

I had a similar problem with a different stove. The sparks are controlled by the spark module (for your stove there are two). Look up your stove by model number here and then click on the Burner Box diagram. The modules are numbers 28 and 29. Hope that helps.

Hello,
You may have a bad spark module or the RF burner may need to be cleaned. Ground a screwdriver to chassis and move to towards the RF igniter. If the spark is strong and jumps to the screw driver, the problem is a poorly grounded burner. If there's still no/weak spark, replace the module, part number 486771.

If your red burner light it on, your spark switch is fine.

Thanks to both of you. Jim, there is only one spark module in my stove. The other "box" is the simmer control for the XLO burners.

Servicer: Thank you. And I had to go back and look for that red burner light. I never noticed it before and it's at the opposite end of the stove from the malfunctioning burner. I will check it out, and also try the grounding trick, when the thing decides to act up again. (Right this minute it is working normally )

And also, where did you get that part number from? When I check looking at the closest match: PGR486GG, I see, for the part number:

Part Number: AP2836547
Made by BOSCH

AP2836547 is the number Appliance Parts Pros has assigned to it. I got the Thermador number off their website.

Again thank you. One more question. In order to get access, I will need to remove the burners. To do that, there is what appears to be a nut in the center of the burner assembly, but it is really a "venturi". It looks like it is made out of brass and I'm guessing that it might be a little corroded (dissimilar metals and all that). Do you have any idea of the proper size socket to use on that part; and also whether it is normal or reverse threaded?

Finally, one of the burner controls seems sticky. By that I mean it is a bit hard to turn, and also, when I press it in, turn it, and then let go, it doesn't pop out as quickly as the others. How should I fix this?

Thanks.

Hello,
The venturi is 20mm, and it may be frozen to the jet holder assembly. If this is the case, the best thing to do is to drill it out with a uni-bit, aka step drill. You'll then need to replace the venturi tube and jet holder assembly. Make sure to use some anti-sieze grease to prevent it from reoccurring in the future.

Regarding the second issue, a sticking valve can be replaced.
