Over the 17 years I have owned this cook top, I have had considerable problems with the electronic ignition. Sometimes the igniter would not fire, and sometimes it would not stop firing even when the flame was off. I finally tracked down the problem to faulty ignition switches that are mounted on the valve posts. I have had to replace all of them twice. Inspection of these switches indicates very poor mechanical design. They are also completely unshielded from stove top spills. When they get wet, the igniter fires continuously until they dry out (several days)

Questions:

1. Is this a common problem, or do I have a lemon?
2. Is there any way to prolong the life of these things? I thought about installing spill shields over the switches.
3. By what magic does the igniter know if the flame has blown out, so that it can restart it? I have stared at the insides if this cooktop, but can not figure out how the igniter senses the loss of flame. There is no obvious thermocouple or flame sensor. How does it work?

Thanks
