Question Jenn-air Electric Range right-front element fails - hot indicator lamp stays on
Model Number: JES9900BAS   Brand: Jenn-Air   Age: 1 - 5 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

Hello,

I hope you can point me toward trouble-shooting the failure of the range element. I suspect the problem is the heat sensor, since the 'hot element' red indicator light remains illuminated. I've disconnected power and when it's reconnected, the hot element indicator illluminates immediately.

The element does not heat up at all. All other functions of the unit seem OK.

Thanks for your advice!
John

John,

You most likely have a bad right front infinite switch(custom control).

Part number: AP4369619

Part number: AP4369619

I can give you some basic checks at the burner to confirm the diagnosis.

We have no resistance readings for the sensor circuit(never had any).
(but it might be and open circuit if at room temperature).

At the right front burner :

The outer element (red to yellow) should read approximately 35 ohms resistance.

The inner element (red to tan) should read approximately 40 ohms resistance.

If you feel comfortable with live voltage tests.

You can do the same tests at the burner.

Red to yellow on the high setting would be 240 VAC.
Red to tan on the low setting would be 240 VAC.

If these checks are in range (+/- 10%), then replace the burner.

Part number: AP4100557

Part number: AP4100557

But I'm pretty sure you're going to need the switch.

Good Luck,

Default Jenn-Air jes9900bas hot indicator light stays on

I have the same problem with my right burner (custom burner) not working any longer and the hot indicator lap is staying on. I like check the switch and identify what needs to be done to fix it. I like to try Joe's suggestion, however, I need some information on what to take appart and get to the switch. Is there a diagram or exploded view that shows how get to the switch?

Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Dan

Joe was wrong about the source of the problem. I haven't determined whether the temperature sensor is the problem, but I have eliminated the custom control - that was OK.

Thank you John for the quick response. Do you happen to have any information on how to get to the burner, switch and heat sensor area? What parts do I have to remove? Do I have to start with the glass top, or I can just remove the front panel area? I pulled the front knobs off and I noticed that behind each one there are 2 screws. I am guessing that the 2 screws behind each knob are to secure the infinite switches for each burner.... Any diagram available that you know of?

Any info is much appreciated,
Dan

Dan,

Here is a copy of the service manual for your unit,

It has all the information you'll need.

It's a pretty large file, may take a while to download, you may want to save it, or print it out for future reference.

Good Luck,

Dan,

Are you sure you don't have a "pop up blocker" turned on ? it won't down load the file if you do.

You could also right click,on the PDF symbol, select "save target as" and save it to your desktop or whichever file you prefer, then you'll be able to open the file and go from there.

You also referred a phone number in the note I recieved from a co worker,

What hours are you at that number ?

Thanks,

I really appreciate your effort to help me. Here is what I am going through. When I click on your pdf file link in this thread, it takes me to a window that requires a login. I enter my account information (which is diffrent from the forum login) and it says that I cannot use the @ special character. In a separate window, I go to your website (home page) and click on MyAccount. I get the log in page and put the user name and password in. It seems to try to log me in, however, instead of logging me in it comes back with "Internet Explorer cannot open this page" I am going back to your home page and I am logged in. (The Log Out pick is available) Whenever I pick the Track Order or MyAccount I get the same screen with the message: "Internet Explorer cannot open this page". Next step, I go back to your home page and pick Log Out. I pick MyAccount again, and I get the login in prompt, as before. Then I put in the user name and password and go through the same cycle again, as mentioned above.

I disabled the Pop Up blocker. I followed the log in steps outlined above, but the results are the same. One other thing to mention is that I am using a Verizon cellular phone broadband connection. I do not know if this makes any diffrence or not.

I, also, tryed the Save target as. What it does it saves a link on my harddrive. When I double clik on the saved link, it that takes me to the same login screen that I get when I pick directly on you pdf file link in this thread.

I can be reached at the number from your co worker all morning tomorrow. If this does not work for you, please suggest an alternate time. I also left an email address with your co worker. Would it be possible that you can send this file to my email?

Thank you, Dan

Dan,

My thoughts exactly, I'll try and send it to your other e mail address, Hopefully that works ?

I'll give you a ring, later this morning, as soon as possible,

Default Jenn-Air jes9900bas right front element fails-hot indicator light stays on

Bottom line, my problem is solved. I decided to buy the Infinite Switch as Joe M. from the APP tem suggested earlier. I installed this morning and the custom burner works again. Taking my time to ensure that I do not brake anything else in the process of doing it, the installation took about 30 minutes.

Here is how I did it on my electric range Jenn-Air JES9900BAS:
1. Turned power off at the Circuit Breaker.
2. Removed Oven door. (Opened door about 20 degrees and lifted it up)
3. Removed 4 hex screws from the control panel. It requires a 1/4 in socket. These 4 screws are visible after you open/remove the Oven door. (There are other Philips stainless steel (SS) screws holding the SS panel clad. I did not need to remove them)
4. I installed one of the oven racks at the highest setting with a 4 inch cardboard box on it (for extra height) to allow me to put down the control panel once all screws are removed. (Thanks for the pointer Joe M.)
5. Holding on to the panel, (so it does not drop by itself) I removed the last 2 side screws from the control panel. (One Philips head screw on each side of the panel) Gently I guided it down and out and put the control panel on the cardboard box.
6. Before I removed the connectors to the switch, I looked and noted how far they were seated in. I also noted the color and orientation of each connector. Removed the connectors to the infinite switch. It is a good idea to take a digital picture before removing the connectors. (It seemed to me that it would be hard to reverse the connectors, however, better safe than sorry.)
7. Removed the front right knob and the 2 Philips screws, behind the knob, holding the infinite switch. Removed the old infinite switch.
8. Reversing the process, I installed the new switch by using the 2 Philips screws from step 7, and reconnecting the 2 electric connectors from step 6. Make sure the connectors are properly seated in the back of the infinite switch.
9. Re-installed the control panel using the 2 side screw from step 5 and then the 4 screws from step 3.
10. Carefully, not to drop it, I reinstalled the Oven door and closed it.
11. After, checking again to make sure that everything was reinstalled and my electric range was the same way it was before I started the job, I proceeded to turn the power back on.

Total success. The custom dual element worked again like when it was brand new.

I would like to thank Joe M from the APP team, again, for his invaluable coaching and help.
