My oven door does not close properly. I visually inspected the hinges and they appear to operate properly (although I am not sure if I would know if there was only a minor issue with the hinges).

My thought is to replace the gasket between the door and the oven with part AP3131399. Looking at my oven, it seems that the gasket is in place with a thin bead of adhesive or something because I do not see anything holding the gasket in place. How is the gasket attached to the oven? If it is some type of sealant, where can I purchase it?

I think you're going to find something wrong in the hinge assembly(s).

Especially, if you use the door as a shelf when you remove articles from the oven.

The gasket is held to the oven cavity by small metal clips that insert into small slots in the metal.

I attached the instructions for you, from the service manual.
You'll understand better.



CAUTION:

When you work on the electric range,

be careful when handling the sheet metal parts.
Sharp edges may be present, and you can cut

yourself if you are not careful.

1. Turn off the electrical supply to the range.
2. Open the oven door, pull the clips on the old
silicone rubber gasket out of the holes in the
front of the oven (you may need pliers to do
this).
3. Remove any kinks from the new oven door
gasket and clip it to the front of the range.
4. Close the oven door and check to make sure

that the gasket seal is tight and even around the door.

We just moved into the home, so I don't know how the oven had been used.

Thanks for the advise, I'll dig a little deeper into the hinges before I replace the gasket. Do you have any suggestions on what to look for?

When you open the oven door full open,

The oven door should be 90 degrees or less to the oven front ( looking from the side).

If the handle is lower than the bottom of the door at the junction of the the door and oven cavity, start looking for chipped paint and porcelain on the front of the cavity, where the hinges mount to the oven.

Also look for a small bulge outward in the same area.
look at the oven door liner for the same indicators.

If there is chipping or a bulge out on the oven frame, that can't be repaired.
The door liner can, if the part is available.

If there is no visible damage and the door does not go past 90 degrees, order a new set of door springs, and insure the hinge pivot point(s) are not loose , bent , or damaged.
