Does your stove have a glass cooktop or 4 individual burners. Do you have 1 hot surface light or 4 individual lights ? It would be best if you could find the model and serial number plate/tag. (usually located on the lower side cabinet behind the lower panel,or when you open the oven door, along the top trim of the oven opening). We can only generalize at this point.

1) You should have 1 to 4 thermostat(s) in line with the hot surface light, one of those thermostats is stuck closed, and not resetting when the top is cool, or a wire is shorted. 2) If you have a glass cook top with "radiant burners" under the glass(may look like red coils, when on), each burner has a sensor and one of the sensors is stuck closed and not resetting when the top cools down. That's as far as I can get you without a model number to check the wiring, circuitry and operation of the burners.
