Default Need Help with GE Spacemaker XL 1800
Model Number: Spacemaker XL 1800   Brand: GE   Age: 1 - 5 years

My GE has been acting up lately. Initially it stopped working for a few hours (seemingly like it was overheated) After a short period of unplug it seemed to work fine for a few days. However, since them it has started making strange squeaky type noises seemingly from the lower right side. I removed it from the wall, removed the outer cover, turned it on, half expecting a bad fan. UNfortunately the fan itself (plastic) spins freely on or off. It is hard to pinpoint the noise to any specific part. I do not believe it is the fan motor, but cant figure if it is the large (capacitor) type box mounted to the bottom or one of the two silver boxes mounted above with a couple wires coming out of them. Is there any test that I can do to determine my issue? Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Does it heat? What is the complete model number of the microwave?

Gene.

It is very hard (almost not possible) do diagnose such noise issue, especially if there is no heating problem. Guessing is not a way to fix anything. I would wait until it will stop heating.

You need a new fan blade. What is happening is the Blade is not secure on the shaft of the fan, so it spins freely. the fan motor is turning normal, but because of the slippage of the blade, you get that squeek noise. The other thing that is happening is because the blade is slipping it is not moving very much air to keep the magnetron cool, so it is tripping the thermal overload on the magnetron, it is a self resetting tco that is why the power will come back on after it has cooled down, and kill the power when it has over heated. Should'nt cost you more than about $10 for the fan blade...Keep us posted.........
