thermostat. Problem is mw won't do anything after potato caught fire inside.

Normally the thermal fuse for the cabinet blows when a fire occurs.

The cabinet needs to be removed to access this part under most circumstances.

Remove the outer cabinet and look for a 2 wire component normally on the left side near the top of the microwave. Check it for continuity.
