Question Oven / Microwave Combination Wall Unit
Model Number: RM770PXBQO   Brand: Whirlpool   Age: More than 10 years

I apologize if I've posted this more than once; had a little trouble.

The microwave died in our 1994 Whirlpool combination oven/microwave wall unit. The unit is right next to an end wall .. about a inch from it ... making it impossible to get to the screws on that side that might otherwise be removed to get the microwave out.

A service tech pried open the touch pad control to replace the fuse but that did not fix the problem. The unit came back on but it was making a noise that the service tech described as shorting out. More parts were ordered and an estimate of over $450.

Yesterday the tech said that the only way to get to the microwave was by removing the oven but he could not, saying it was wedged in. Now, an "installer" has to come to try to remove the oven. I'm sure this will add to the estimate.

Is this proceeding correctly? Can the microwave be swapped out instead of replacing the parts? My husband and I are contemplating attempting to free the oven ourselves. Any diagrams or instructions on how to do this this would be greatly appreciated.

We live in the Albany NY area.

Hi LaVinnia,

The microwave can be removed from the unit separately if you can remove the outer frame which is held by the two screws on each side, three or four screws on top and two screws behind the cover of the oven door latch handle.

The hardest part of it is to remove the two screws from the end of the wall side. I believe with the proper tool it's possible as well. If you have a hardware store nearby, ask a sales person for some advise.

I'm wondering which parts your tech wants to replace. The estimated price looks suspicious to me.

Here are the break down diagrams for the oven and microwave combo Model RM770PXBQ0

Gene.

If your magnetron is arcing to the waveguide, the unit would be to much to fix. The waveguide is welded in and not replaceable.

Gene and Rich -
Many thanks for your replies. Gene, which two screws on the end wall side are you referring to. It looks like there are 5 in total. If I only need to remove 2, that would be a blessing. (I hope it's the two that I've already gotten out

The amount and the location of the screws on both sides are absolutely the same. I do not remember exactly but you can find it looking on the other side of the frame.
