My microwave is 5 years old. 4 years ago, the magnetron was replaced; 3 years ago, the diode was replaced. Up until 2 months ago, there were no problems. Then, 2 months ago, there was a flash of light and a loud bang, probably a case of arching. Later that night, I used it to heat up my dinner and there was no problem. It worked normally. Then, 7 weeks after this incident, the same thing occurred again: a large flash of light and a loud bang. I did not use the unit for 2 weeks. Then I tried testing it by heating up 8 oz's of water in a small glass for 25 seconds. It worked normally. The water was warm as I expected. The light is on, the turntable turns, the touch-pad responds normally and the fan works. All seems normal. Is the magnetron the problem? Or could it be that the mica wave control board covering the magnetron is so dirty with splatters from cooking that it somehow is causing what appears to be an intermitant case of arching? What say you.
