I have a Kenmore Microwave Model 401.80093700 and after cooking some rice the control panel went blank. No power to microwave. I replaced the fuses and have attempted to check the continuity on the capacitor, turn table motor, and the thermostats that I could get to. I ruined the metal prong on the motor attempting to remove wire leads so I'll definitely have to replace that. I need to know what to replace and how to determine that. I'm not sure how to check if there is power going to the control panel.

Hi.

Don't check all the parts in the microwave.First make sure there is 120VAC at the outlet, then check if the noise filter is not burnt part #DE96-00400D, then run the continuity test across two limit thermostats - the cavity #DE47-20059A, and #DE44-20007A on the magnetron.

Replace the bad part.

Post the results.

Simon.

Ok, I figured out how to use my multi-meter (thanks youtube). Capacitor good, diode good, HV transformer ???, magnetron and thermostat good, noise filter looks fine with no burn marks, two thermostats in cavity (one good, one bad), and of course the turntable motor is bad since I pulled out the metal lead. So, I'm ordering the parts and I'm hoping that the bad thermostat is why the power won't come on. And of course I checked the power at the outlet and it is good. Thanks for the advice Simon. I'll update once parts are in.

Hi.

Before ordering parts you should temporary bypass the thermostat in question. Install the jumper wire and see if it'll work. Also, check the fuse again (now you know how to use the multimeter). If there is a wiring schematic send me the picture of it.

I have good and bad news. First the bad. I ordered the wrong thermostat (bottom or hood) not sure which one. Then I ordered the right one and replaced it but the power still didn't come on. So I decided to dig a little deeper and find the cavity thermostat and low and behold the wire was burnt. Continuity check confirmed it was bad.

Good news: The original part I ordered was what I needed for the cavity thermostat and after replacing it the control panel powered on and the microwave works great. I was also able to avoid electrocution so it was a big win.

In the end I was able to fix my $450 microwave with two thermostats for less than $5 (minus the S/H, stripped out turntable motor terminal, and some sweat equity). Thanks to Simon and some great video footage of multimeters on YouTube. This really saved me lots of cash. Lets just hope my house doesn't burn down from this.
