Model Number: YKHMS2050S Brand: Kitchen Aid Age: 1 - 5 years
When I turn on my stove the heat obviously rises to the microwave hood fan combo. As soon as the microwave hood fan starts to heat up, the display disappears, and the microwave hood fan starts beeping. The exhaust fan that is supposed to come on when there is too much heat from the stove, does not activate. The microwave hood fan continues to beep until the hood fan cools off, then the display comes on again, and the unit functions again. It's almost like the heat causes the power to shut down. When I removed the grease screens, I saw that there was a "synchronous motor" inside. Is this part maybe screwed up, or could it be the computer portion that is fried?

The first failure suspect is the base thermostat (#18 on the diagram) which operates the exhaust fan by the bottom panel temperature. You have to remove the bottom panel to access the part.

You should manually turn on the microwave's hood vent exhaust fan whenever you cook on the stovetop to keep out heat, steam and grease.
Otherwise, the heat can damage the membrane keypad on the microwave or exacerbate any contmination or bad connections on the control board, causing various odd behaviors. If and when an oven is coming on or doing anything by itself, this is very dangerous and can result in a fire. So until it is repaired, please leave it unplugged or leave the door open when it's not in use, and please do not leave it running unattended. You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here. Let us know if we can help further. William E.
