Model Number: MMV4205BAB Brand: Maytag Age: 1 - 5 years
My microwave failed last week. It smoked up the house with a nasty smell and did not heat the veggies inside. I disconnected power, pulled the cover and discharged the capacitor. The HV transformer secondary appears to be what got hot. Now I'm trying to determine which component went bad. I disconnected the leads from the HV transformer to the magnetron and the capacitor. I measured the primary winding and got 0.2 ohms (spec approx 0.3 + 2% ), the seconday winding and got 118 ohms (spec approx 90 ohms +2%), and the filament winding and got 0 ohms ( spec 0 ohms ). Primary and Filament to ground both measured infinite per spec. I also checked across the magnetron terminals and got 0.2 ohms (spec less than 1 ohm ) and terminal to chassis infinite per spec. I then checked the across the capacitor leads and got 5 Mega ohms that slowly increased to 10 M ohms. Not sure how long it would take to get to infinite, but I didn't try. Capacitor terminals to case measured infinite per spec. I then measured the diode with it disconnected from the capacitor, but not from the case, and got no continuity in either direction. Am I following a good trouble shooting procedure? Can you tell from my symptoms what might have failed. Thanks for your help. Greg
