This is a _general_ question.
All the microwaves I've ever owned only make noise with the door closed. I'm alarmed when some microwaves where I work continue to make noise with the door open. I guess I'm equating the noise with a part that spins to distribute the energy, but maybe it's just a fan? Am I alarmed over nothing? Or could they be shooting microwaves everywhere

? This is an enormous campus with hundreds of microwave ovens--I'm worried that there could be a significant safety issue nobody is paying attention to. Is this possible, or am I just misunderstanding how these devices work?
I reported one today and got the brush-off, this was a Sharp commercial model, a brand not in the pull-down menu. Maybe they were right and it's a non-issue--hope so.
Last year I left a note on one of these, and unplugged it. I noticed it got replaced...
