I am having problems with the lightbulbs that are installed under my microwave to illuminate the stove top beneath the microwave. There are two settings...low and high. The high does not operate...burns out the new bulb immediately.

Is it necessary to buy a bulb manufactured by Whirlpool (@ $8.00 a piece) or should any "appliance" bulb suffice?

I would like to rule out light bulb problems before paying a technician to come out and diagnose whether or not the problem lies deeper.

Thank you,
Cindy

Usually it's best to get the correct bulb, most regular appliance bulbs don't have 2 cycles. But if it's blowing the bulb immediately you may have deeper issues. If in doubt call a tech to check.
