I have Whirlpool microwave. Button for door release is not working. I want to remove the control panel to get access to part #8205451 (Lever release). But I am not able to remove outer cover of the microwave. The screws have special head. Is there a special key available to remove the screws

Generally those are torque screws.

The screw can not be removed with regular screw driver such as Philips head or flat head. The slot on head of screw is shape of star. As shown here *. And center of start has obstruction so that you can not use flat head screw driver. (Technique used here is similar to wheel lock nuts for car which require special key)

I managed to remove the screws using smaller size flat head screw driver. Now I found that 'Release Lever' was broken as I thought

Yes, which can generally be purchased at an auto parts store. Check to see if they have the security stud or not.
