Smile GE Profile Spacemaker XL1800
Model Number: jvm1871sk03   Brand: GE   Age: 1 - 5 years

Hi my GE Profile Spacemaker XL1800 started off making noise from the vent area while heating food about two months ago. Now when I'm heating something it turns off after couple of minutes. Then comes back on after 10 - 15 minutes. I have to then key in date. Seems that it's overheating. Also seems that when the microwave is on the fan is not on. I thought that when the microwave is on the Automatic fan should right away kick in? Also I noticed if I press the vent fan button it works manually? any ideas on what it might be. I ordered a magnetron from GE which was under warranty they will be sending to me soon. But I'm thinking maybe the automatic fan to cool unit off might not be coming on. When is suppose to come on? Help any ideas as I don't know what I'm talking about being I'm not a technician.

Anthony, you are correct about the fan. The fan is used to cool the magnetron during cooking, and because this fan is not working the mag is overheating and the thermal protector is opening, killing power to the unit, until it cools back down. All you need to fix this is a new fan blade. The fan blade is slipping on the motor shaft ( the noise you are hearing). The new fan blade fits tighter to the shaft to prevent this from happening again.

Thank You. But I don't hear the noise anymore? why? if the fan blade was slipping isn't it the same fan when I press the vent button. Because the vent fan works when I press it on low, med and high. Or are these separate fans. Also are there any instructions on replacing the fan blade somewhere and should i also replace the magnetron since GE is sending to me? oh and just to confirm the fan is suppose to go on when the food is heating right?

Oh I also noticed there is no charcoal filter in the unit do you have this part number thanks

Different fans. There is your vent fan, and there is the magnetron fan. The magnetron fan blade is the bad one. You can look behind the control panel, remove the vent cover, take out the 1 screw at the top of the control panel. Push up on the panel and it will come off, and you can see the fan there. I replace the fan blades with the control off, kinda tricky though. Or you can remove the M/W remove the outer casing and do it that way. You do not need to replace the magnetron. and yes the fan comes on when you press start. Drop the control panel down and program to cook, and watch the fan blade. Does your M/W vent to the outside of the house, or forward into the kitchen? This will tell you if you need a charcoal filter or not. You only need the filter if the vent exhausts back into the kitchen.

Hi which one is the vent cover is it the one that open up on top front when you put the microwave on. This has two screws on top. Then when you remove this there is another cover underneath where the charcoal filter should be is this the control panel? Oh and by the way the vent opens to the front. Air comes out from the vent which opens from the front.

Yes, the vent cover is the one that opens when you turn on, and your control panel is the one that has all the buttons on it to program the m/w.

Thanks. Oh ok so when you take off the vent cover I will be able to see a screw on the top of the external keypad(control unit). Right? ok so tonight I'll try that. If I see the fan is working than what else could it be? Also where is the magnetron located and how would I replace that?
