My kenmore elite heavy duty washer fills and then when the cycle timer advances I hear a distinct hum...but nothing moves there is no grinding. There is a kind of "plasticy" smell, but not a horrible...

I further observed that the element is on and heat is coming out of the perforated plate as soon as i turn the control dial to anything but "off". This is with the door open.
