Some (most) older window units come with a port to fill the compressor with gas, then it's welded shut at the factory. In order to be able to charge these units, or even check the charge on them, new saddle ports need to be brazed on by someone with brazing experience.

You need an A-2 Tap. This tap will be placed on the fat pipe suction line coming from the compressor. Sand down the surface of the copper pipe before installing the valve. Charge the unit slowly till it holds 68.5 PSI. If you have a clamp on meter monitor the amp draw of the compressor while charging. Look on the nominclature tag and note the amp draw total when the unit is operating. No welding is needed with an A-2 tap. It has adapters to configure different size pipe and a tool to tighten the screws.
