I have a Hampton Bay model KC-25Y1 portable A/C that is 8,000 BTU. This unit has cooled my home office through 10 Texas summers. (I mounted external filters and opened the unit every 2 - 3 years to clean condenser and evaporator.)

We've had hot/cold/hot/cold this spring. About 2 months ago the A/C was running and the compressor stopped. Normally that only happens when the water tank is full and it also causes the "Water Full" red light to flash on the control panel. In this instance the "Cool" green light was flashing. I'd never seen that before and it's not listed in the manual. I turned the unit off and worked in another room. It was about a week later before I turned the unit on again, and it has worked fine since then, cooling 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Yesterday I noticed water under the unit dripping from the case. I opened it up this morning and found the drain in the pan under the evaporator was clogged. Cleaned it out, put it back together and started it up. It cooled fine for about 10 minutes and the compressor turned off and the green Cool light is flashing.

What are the reasons that an A/C's control circuitry will turn off the compressor? The unit cools fine except when it decides it doesn't want to. I can do light repair (sensor replacement?), but I don't have any idea what it might *think* is wrong.

If it does cool and it's exhausting properly, it's going to probably be the evap thermostat or the temperature thermostat. If it's giving you a temperature display see if it's a realistic temp for where its at, if the "Water full" light is coming on prematurly your fill sensor in the unit has expired and needs to be replaced. My guess is the compressor is over heating because the condensor isnt getting cooled properly. Your condensor cooling system is probably intermittantly failing, or has a bad sensor to tell that system to operate properly.
