Ihave replaced the thermocouple on my hotwater heater but the pilot will not stay lit. As soon as you release the red button it goes out. Could it be the thermostat gas valve thats bad?

Take a pencil eraser and clean out that hole where the thermocouple screws into the magnet. Put the tip of the probe into the flame. Use a torch to light the pilot. That flame heats up the copper and nickle probe and that turns into a small battery. That voltage holds in the magnet. If the magnet is bad you is gonna need to replace the control. OUCH!
