Hi there, could use some good ac advice from some of you ac pros. I have a Trane that is about 11 years old. It is currently very very hot here in San Antonio and everyones units are being put to the test. Long story short, when my thermostat kicks in and tells the unit to turn on everything seems to function except that the fan will not turn. After trying a multitude of solutions, I simply gave the fan a little push and it started spinning normally. When I shut it down and turned it back on, same problem.

I guess I could have simply said "AC fan will not engage without a spin of assistance."

Am I correct in thinking that this issue is being caused by a weak fan motor? Money is an issue for me at this time and I would love to be able to do this repair myself. Seeing as how the fan will start to spin when assisted, I'm hoping that I am on the right track.

Thank you for the reply Scuba Steve, you are 100% right on. When I opened it up, the capacitor was obviously puffed up next to the connections just as a bad can from the grocery store would bubble up. When I went to get the replacement, they didn't have the same unit that controls both the fan and the compressor, therefore we split it into 2 capacitors and "viola", I was back in business. Total cost equated to $12.50. Man, that's the kind of repair I can be proud of. Thank you for taking the time to respond.
