My Ge heat pump is throwing the breaker. I opened the unit and the fan blade where I found one of the motor wires shorted to the frame. I replaced the wire but still it throwing the breaker. I completely removed the motor and the breaker stayed on. Is this enough information that I should replace the motor.

I like so many others am laid off and my daughter has asthma. I have a lot of background working with circuits so it's me or nothing.

Well I remove the blower motor and disconnected the compressor wires. It still throws the breaker. Next I disconnected the power wires from the heat pump completely, the breaker did not turn off. Then I hooked the power back up as far as the relay and it did throw the breaker. The relay was replaced 3yrs ago.

Icehouse Do you still think the motor an capacitor along with the relay should be replaced? Would a loss of freon cause the breaker to trip?
