I've got a Whirlpool ACM122XK1 that was manufactured in May of 2002. The fan runs but the compressor doesn't. I had the same problem about 5 years ago and I had to replace the capacitor at a DIY cost of (I think) around $35. Money is a little tight right now so I'm debating with myself if it's the same problem, should I put any more money into a 9+ year old machine, or just go buy a new unit. (The compressor had been making some new sounds this season.) Just wondering what the life expectancy of these things were in 2002? Opinions?

Do you still have this a/c unit? ACM122XK1.

I will also suggest you to get your a/c checked once, if all other parts are good then there is no need to change your machine, you can take its service for some more time. But if the parts of a/c are not in good condition then do change your a/c otherwise it will again ask for maintenance after some time.
