Check your operators manual.
A model number may help others help you. GE makes a lot of different units. If you do not have the operators manual you may be able to download it from the GE site but you will need the model number. As far as shutting the compressor off but leaving the fan on, that is possible. Usually you can hear when the compressor is running.
