Model Number: GFC520F Brand: GE Age: More than 10 years
House is only 20 years old and we bought it this summer - disposer can't be older than 20 yrs - but it leaks - I suspect not the flange gasket but the mechanical or shaft seal. Do these get repaired or replaced?
If replaced, should I go ahead and get another GE so I can use the existing flange, etc.? gracias is advance; papa smurf |

Your garbage disposer has to be replaced.
As a replacement option I would recommend the 1/2 H.P. continuous feed with quick-lock mounting and galvanized steel grinder garbage disposer made by the Whirlpool. It has the same design as a very good known In Sink Erator garbage disposer and cost about 25 bucks less. It comes with the complete, step by step installation instructions. - The part number for the Whirlpool garbage disposer is AP3121409 Good luck. Gene.

It was the flange gasket after all
- and it had been incorrectly installed (mind you - a relatively new house) - with both the rubber and fiber gaskets below the sink. A new set of gaskets from a big box store cost $2.15 and after much cussing and torquing I managed to get the thing back in, cleaned up and leak free, tested with both sides of the sink full to the brims for 30 minutes. Thanks to Gene for the reply and also - to the websites for diagrams and instructions on how to uninstall and reinstall the unit. One other thing - I called GE and purchased parts from them and they are yet to be delivered - the same parts I got for $2.15 from a nearby store cost over $24 from GE mailed tp my house - hopefully I can return them. It is also impossible to understand the customer service reps on the phone - I will not be going that route ever again. Papa smurf Quote:

I'm glad you were able to fix it.
Gene.
