after several minutes of drying the machine begins to squeal loudly. We are trying to figure out how to open up the cabinet...there does not seem to be an easy way

Well I understand your frustration. It is easy to open, but not too obvious, so I am posting the service manual for you.

I suspect replacing the rollers, belt and tension pulley along with a good cleaning out will fix things up for you.
