I have had the dryer for 12+ years. Within the last year I had it serviced. Should I pay to have it serviced, or buy a new one? Can I fix it myself?

Well, taken care of dryers last forever, and this is as good a one as any.

I assume the motor and everything else works ok. If you will post your model number we can tell you how to check if the belt is the problem, and if so, tell you how to replace it.

The motor runs! It is a Kenmore 70 Series Heavy Duty Super Capacity Plus. Model #66722694 66722 Dont know if you need Serial #MH5190161

Ok, good. Sounds like your belt is broken and will need to be replaced. It will take a little time if you have never done this before, but it is pretty easy and does not need any special tools or skills.

Take out the lint screen and take out the two screws that are underneath the lint screen cover there on top. You can now flip up the top of your dryer by inserting a screw driver in the gap between the top and front at the edges and prying up. The top will flip up on hinges.

You will now notice the lack of a belt around the drum. Take out the two screws that hold the front on, and unhook the door switch. The front will now lift off two clips at the bottom that hold it on.

You can now take out the drum from the front, and you will probably see the remnants of the belt on the floor. Clean out everything, put the drum back on the rollers, put the tension pulley in correctly (it will have flipped out) and put the new belt over the drum. Run it over the tension pulley and motor pulley (depress the tension pulley making sure it stays in place) according to the diagram at the top of this page in the Sticky on belt routing.

Then put things back together and there your are.

Just take your time, get a helper you can boss around and you should be able to do this.
