I have a GE Profile Gas Dryer that is about 9 years old that will not start up at all, after running and finishing a load last night. There is power to the unit as the light still functions. Reading online it seems that there are four likely problems; the start switch, the door switch, or one of the thermostats (as near as I can tell, this model does not have a thermal fuse but rather 2 or maybe 3 thermostats). The door switch pops when pressed and turns the light on and off, so I think that is not the problem. I attempted to test the start switch by opening up the panel and physically touching the red (motor) wire to the brown (leads to the timer) wire which are the only connections to the start switch housing. This accomplished nothing, so I think this rules out the start switch being bad, but I'm not sure my test provides 100% certainty. The next step gets way more complicated as I would have to get into the guts to replace/test the thermostats. Questions: Am I on the right track? How do I test the thermostats without buying a replacement, sticking it in, reassembling everything, holding my breath and trying to turn it on? Is there another possible solution I have not considered? Help...

To test the thermostats, take all the wires off the thermostat. Use a multimeter to check for continuity (which there should be). If there is not continuity, chances are that thermostat is bad.
