The dryer turns itself off when it heats - then turns back on after cools. Does not dry clothes.

The dryer turns itself off when it heats - then turns back on after cools.
If it shuts off for several minutes, it sounds like the motor is overheating and it's internal thermal protect is tripping.
Several things can cause this
1. The motor is on it's last legs re: the main winding is shorted inside the motor or bad bearings.

2. The drum is overloading the motor. Try rotating the drum in the correct direction by hand, it should turn fairly easily. You may want to try this on a couple other dryers to get a feel for it. If it is hard to turn then it could be motor bearings are shot, seized rear roller, seized idler wheel, worn front supports etc.
Also could be something is jammed between the drum and the frame.

3. The start/main centrifugal switch is shot. Once the motor gets close to operating speed, this switch removes the motor's stat winding from the circuit.
If the winding is left in circuit the motor will overheat.
Since the unit seems to heat OK I would say that the mechanical device in the motor that actuates the switches is OK, as the second switch connects in the heating coil. If the mechanism was stuck you would have heat when the motor was not running. So the switch contacts are probably welded together.

4. The motor is so clogged up with lint that it cannot cool itself.
