my dryer works for a while, then shuts off. the light also shuts off. When it shuts off, the dial stops turning. I replaced the thermostat last year and everything worked great. Now the problem is back.

Which light shuts off?

If you open the door and you do not have an interior light perhaps the door switch is acting up.

When it shuts off, the dial stops turning. I replaced the thermostat last year and everything worked great.
A thermostat should not cause this type of problem since they are in the heater circuit and not the motor circuit. Though there is usually a thermal fuse in the motor circuit but when this blows it does not reset.

Can you restart the machine right away just with the push to start?
If you have to wait a couple minutes before it will restart, this is often a motor problem. The motor is overheating, it's internal thermal cut-out trips and you have to wait till the motor cools down before you can restart.

I cannot start the machine right away. I have to wait a few minutes.

Sounds like your motor is overheating.

Try turning the drum in the correct direction. It should turn fairly easily.
If not it may be overloading the motor causing it to overheat.

Open it up and check that the motor is not clogged solid with lint.

If both the above are OK then you probably need a new motor.

the drum turns easily, but it does not sound like it is running smoothly. It sounds like it may be off balance. What would cause this thumping sound?

Usually a thumping noise is a rear support roller.

Other causes could be a ripped drum seal or someting in the blower.

the noise stopped (I pushed the fan into place), but the dryer still keeps shutting off. I did notice what I think is a thermostat near the fan. Could this need to be replaced? Sometimes it runs for a half hour, other times 10 minutes.:)

This could be your problem. It could be stripped inside and is slipping on the shaft. I would remove it and inspect it.

The noise has stopped and everything is perfect! The "c" shaped pin had stretched when I pulled out the fan and it was hitting. I tightened it and now the noise is gone. I pulled out the thermostat and found dust, just like you said. You guys are genious. Thanks for saving me big bucks. I'll be back the next time things go bad.:D
