Maytag Drum slightly rough, out of round.
Model Number: MDG508DAWW Brand:
More than 10 years
Came with house purchased 2 yrs ago and is higher end model than lowest model Kenmore (16-yr Whirlpool - white with brown controls) we had at home, so I switched to this one and sold the Kenmore. (The Kenmore was excellent, worked well, with no work ever done on it, just as a side note).
But this upper end Maytag gas dryer has more features and looks more like our Kenmore 800 series washer so I went with it. Have had it apart a few times mainly to deal with this issue: The drum is noisy. Friend and I tried measuring and straightening it (filling a sloppy looking weld with epoxy helped), and to some extent it is improved but not smooth-quiet like it should be. I learned how to disassemble a dryer fairly well doing this crazy exercise. How could it have gotten out of round?
Rollers were fine, belt was perfectly good so I did not change it. I did what I could to smooth the drum, reversed it so back was in front (it seems reversible), totally cleaned and vacuumed everything, disassembled & cleaned+lubed the rollers and reassembled. It works ok, just a bit thumpy from having a visibly uneven surface. Any thoughts on this? It's ok to leave as-is, but I kind of wonder how a dryer drum could be manufactured to be out of round from the get-go. I have not even tried to look for a replacement. The drum is SS I think. Thanks much for any ideas. Don
