Default Whirlpool dryer turning off during cycle
Model Number: LEN2000KQ1   Brand: Whirlpool   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

My dryer will start up and run for about 10 mins max and then will shut off. It's heating up and working. When I try to start it back up it won't immediately work. It will take up to another 10 mins before it'll start again and then the process repeats itself.
Any ideas what may be causing this and if it's something I can fix?

Thank you

I am currently working on a kenmore dryer, getting advice here as well.
So.. I dont have advice, but a few tips and links that are worth a look.

There may be a tech/service/troubleshooting guide with a wiring diagram taped or attached to the inside of the top or casing. This can be a big help.

Check and clean the exhaust vent all the way out. Kind of obvious, but it can get restricted enough to cause overheating.

These links show a parts diagram and good video on safely opening it up, and taking a look inside. I'm NOT saying these are the problem parts (Thermostat and hi-limit), but you might end up testing them for continuity if you go this route.

The sticky thread about testing continuity may be of some assistance as well.

With the info linked, you can get a better idea on part location and some troubleshooting options.
good luck

It sounds like the motor might be overheating.

Things that can cause the motor to overheat:

Bad motor bearings.

Bad drum bearing, support rollers, or something dragging the motor down.

Bad voltage to dryer or motor.

Motor buried in lint.

I cleaned out the end of the exhaust that blows outside. It was almost crusted shut with lint. I tryed running it again and same thing after 10 mins. It made about 6 loud thumping noises and then cut off again. Im not very technical so many of the things you mentioned are probably beyond something i can do other then cleaning lint from the motor. Is that located behind? Easily accessible?

If you click on the Model # highlighted in blue at the upper right of your post, it will take you to parts for your dryer.
Each part has a replacement video on its page. The one I linked previously shows how to safely open the back of the unit.
This one shows opening the top and motor replacement.

If anything it will allow you to get inside safely and clean. A word of caution, many bare sheet/ metal edges inside are quite sharp. Notice he wears gloves in the vid.. not a bad idea. Be careful there. Unplug the unit first of course!

If the end/outside exhaust was that plugged, you will want to clean the whole pipe thoroughly . Removing it from the dryer, you can clean the portion of the exhaust inside the dryer as well. Again be careful reaching in there, watch sharp edges.
I try to clean my aluminum flex exhaust duct at least every few months to avoid overheating or potential for fire. Good preventive maintenance for peak performance and energy savings as well.
The videos are really helpful and show a great step by step, making it very easy to get inside for cleaning or parts replacement. The few minutes it takes to watch them is well worth your time. Some things are easier than you would think, once you see how it it done correctly.
good luck
