My Dryer recently quit working. I immediately noticed that the timer knob felt strange when I would turn it. It wasn't turning smooth and wouldn't stop in all locations but just jump to 2 or 3 locations. I ordered a new timer switch (PN#WE04X20416) and installed it and it fired right up and turning the knob felt normal again. I let it run for about a half hour before leaving the house and everything was fine. When I returned that evening the clothes that were in the dryer were dry so I assumed everything was good. The next morning I went to use the dryer this morning and I have the same issue with the timer knob feeling weird and the dryer wont turn on again. Need some help... I have to assume that there is something else that is going on that is causing the timer switch to fail? I got 1 load of clothes dried with my new $50 switch. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Can you elaborate a little on when you say the timer won't stop in all locations? Do you mean when you turn it to a certain spot it will advance on its own to a different spot?
Does this same thing occur if you turn the dial to that spot with the door open?
I also imagine when you say it quit working that it won't start when you push the start button?

Thanks for the response. Yes as you turn the timer switch it's motion isn't smooth and it will advance itself in certain areas. It does the same thing with the door open. After the initial load after replacing the switch It won't start when I push the start button.

Apparently there is a short circuit somewhere. The timer motor should only run when the dryer is running and it shouldn't run when the door is open. Some further investigation on your part I'm afraid. Now it's very likely your old timer is good.
So do you happen to have the wiring schematic for you unit? Typically it is tucked away in the control head of the machine.

Thanks for taking the time to help, I figured it out. I now feel pretty stupid for changing out the timer switch. It turns out the the turn knob was cracked where it slides on to the timer shaft. This was causing the knob to just spin without actually moving the timer shaft.
