Dryer would first run thru a normal cycle, then would have to cool down before it would be able to do another cycle. Now when I push the button to start, it just makes a loud noise and won't engage in a cycle at all. I can hear the timer working but that is it. Please help with suggestions on what it may be.

Here are your parts
Parts for Admiral LNC7764A71 Dryer - AppliancePartsPros.com

If the noise is a buzz then it is probably a motor problem.

Try turning the drum by hand. Should turn fairly easily. If not could be the drum is jammed for some reason. You may want to try this on a couple other dryers to get a feel for it.
If it is difficult to turn run your fingers around the back and front of the tub to machine seal. To see if something has jammed between the tub and frame (bra wires are famous for this). Be careful in case the object is something sharp.
If nothing is jammed in there you will have to open it up and find the cause.

If it rotates OK.
This may take 2 people
Open the door
Manually hold the door switch closed
Push the start button and manually rotate the drum in the correct direction.
Watch your knuckles in case it starts up.
If it does start up, odds are high that you need a new motor.

Could also be that the motor is jammed solid with lint and this is preventing the Start/Run centrifugal switch from resetting (the unit is trying to start with out the motor's start winding in circuit.

Yes when the drum is jammed mostly the noise is loud, so, check it or else take it to the repair center.

well....completely opened up the whole machine and cleaned it out of all it's lint...only to now have it smoke when I push the on button as well as make the loud buzzing noise...and btw...I cannot afford to take it to a repair shop...hence the reason why I am trying to repair it myself...I am suspecting I need a new motor..Can anyone confirm this?

Sorry but only you can determine this.

It does sound like this is the problem.
In most cases if the drum turns fairly easily in the correct direction by hand and there is motor buzz it is the motor that is faulty.
