Hello,

My Maytag Model MCE8000AYW is having problems with the display.

While in standby mode the display beeps irradically and wrinkle press light begins flashing. Then after a few minutes other lights flash and the timers will change times. Sometimes the Dryer will start by itself then it will stop and start and stop and start etc. After a while eventually it will go to dd setting on the display and will stop doing anything. I can open the door and restart the whole process. Also if I turn the display off it will turn back on by itself.

I have found a work around. If I open the door and reset the display I can start a load of wet clothes, But to make all the weirdness stop I have to pull off the panel and disconnect the J1B pin from the logic board. The load will dry as normal. But having to do this for every load is not a viable option because this is the pin for the start button and other display like the rest of the timer.

I thought it was the logic board so I replaced it, but I and am still getting the same problem.

ps. Is there any way to clean the contacts under the control panel membrane? (I was thinking that it might be a problem with dirty contacts?) Maybe heat the membrane to un-stick it from the plastic panel????????

No, it looks like a bubble type keybord. You could clean the connectors between the boards. See below

This would destroy it.

It could be that you have a DC power supply problem. If it is low it will cause the electronics to do all sorts of weird things.
This may be a unit that is best left to a pro due to it's complexity.
But then again I do not know your background or expertise.

Connector Cleaning
Unplug the unit
Open it up
Remove the ribbon cable from the keypad to the control board at the control board.
Clean the edge connector.
If it is the type where there is not a connector just the insulation is removed, it can be cleaned with a pencil eraser. Do not use an ink eraser as it is too abrasive.
Check the tracks in the ribbon cable for hairline cracks. A magnifying glass helps here.
Would not hurt to clean the connector on the board. Use electronics contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol and a tooth brush. Be gentle and do not reconnect till all the solvent evaporates.
Reconnect everything and give it a try.

I have been looking at the manual and I can't see where plug J1A and J2A on the ribbon go to??? I know it goes between the board and the display, but the manual does not label them?

Be sure to leave the dryer unplugged to prevent the chance of a fire.

I wish I had seen this post before you bought then new logic board, because the problem is the membrane keypad shorting.

But then again, most suppliers will let you return an unneeded part, but they may charge a restocking fee of about 10-20%.

Simply tell them it was not needed, and they will want a copy of the invoice and possibly the box and packing it came in.

Just call and ask them about their return & "RMA" policy if you don't know.

If your dryer is stored in a damp area or an unheated area, that dampness or changes in temperature can cause moisture deposits (white, gray, or black powdery residue), or the keypad may just lose its elasticity over time.

Seems to be an epidemic of bad membrane keypads on microwaves these days, but that's anothe matter - maybe!

What you need to order is the "Console w/membrane" which is the control assembly with a new membrane kyepad already attached.

The part number is 31001658 and you can order it for $316.66 here.

Thanks Micro,
I did some wiring and found out that the panel wire #5 on the J1B plug is the culprit. That connects multiple buttons on the display. My work around is going to include a plunger switch on the front of the panel to break the circuit except when it is pressed, this is so I can start and stop the dryer. I've been testing it and everything I need works fine as long as that #5 wire is not attached.
