My Whirlpool dryer hums as long as you press the start button, but won't spin. If you try to spin the drum by hand, it's difficult to spin it counter-clockwise, and it won't spin at all clockwise. Before it quit, I had noticed that it would squeak once in a while when you first started it up. I haven't opened it up yet to take a look -- what is this likely to be?

I did pull the back off to check for anything stuck in the fan, and it looked OK (other than 24 years of lint in the bottom of that housing).

I took it apart, and it appeared that the rollers, esp. the left side roller, were not turning freely, so I put it back together without the belt, and by golly the motor spins OK. I'm thinking that I should replace the rollers, possibly the shafts, and also the belt and idler puller while I've got it apart.

Roller shafts are usually OK.
You will have to remove the rollers to be able to check them for wear.

Looks like your rollers are held on by tri-rings.
These often break when removing them so I would take the rollers off before ordering anything as you may also have to get replacements for these.

It is a good idea to check the front drum support/bearing ring.
Check that rear drum seal is OK.

Belt should be replaced if it has cracks or seems brittle.

Idler wheel depends on how much slop there is in the wheel.

Also check the motor. It should easily spin. Check for bearing slop.

I'd say that the motor doesn't spin easily. I have to grab the shaft and twist really hard to get it to rotate.

Then I would say that the motor is toast.

So you have to add it's cost to the repairs.
It may not be worth fixing depending on the total cost and the unit's condition.

This is also a good time to check/clean your vent system

This is weird -- I swear that the motor wasn't turning freely last night, but it is today. No idea why. Maybe just at the end of a long day. Definitely need at least one roller. The belt looks OK to me.

Going to change out the right hand shaft and the rollers. I cleaned the burned on gunk off the shaft and out the the hole on the roller, and it's working for now. It squeaks once in a while, and it's squeaking on that right hand side.
