:confused: Whirlpool Electric Dryer not starting. Have power to dryer (checked with meter), inside light comes on when open the door. Checked thermal fuse, door, start and thermostat switch and they have continuity. Occasionally, if try different areas of the timer the motor comes on for about 15 seconds (with belt on or off). Would like to know how to test or bypass the timer (especially being not normally the issue and part out of stock)? Also, what is the best way to test the motor? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. :confused:

:confused: I jumped the terminals on the back of the timer as directed (please clarify do I jump the terminals or the wires removed from the timer?). Plugged dryer in, still get the inside light, made sure door is shut and when click the start button nothing happens. Does this mean the timer or the motor? Also, what is the return policy on these 2 parts? Thanks for the quick reply, not fun doing without a dryer!

you may want to check your motor. if the motor runs the timer is done. the contact has close, proving the timer was working at that moment. the motor has a thermal limiter on it, which allows it to run until it over heats and trips the limiter. the motor will over heat if the bearing is bad(you should be able to spin it with 2 fingers and turns a little while after you let go), the run winding is bad, sometimes it will hum or drag when it begins to start(you can ohm it out or close the door, press the start button and rotate the drum manually{if it runs then, it is the start winding}). the other possibility is that you are not getting proper voltage to the motor. you would have to measure at the start and run to ensure you are getting 120V.

:confused: I have hooked up meter to number 4 terminal of motor and get 121 volts through all the different cycles of the timer. Motor spins freely. Can I run power direct to the motor as a test?

If you disconnected the wires from timer, then you jump the wires, not the terminals. If your getting 120vac at motor terminal 4, then timer BK to BU is good. Just jump T to W. Yes, you can check motor by applying hot to motor 4 and neutral to motor 5.

Just jumped T to W and now when click start button the dryer runs. Does this mean the timer is bad? Thanks for all the help and expertise!!! :)

If your jumper is substantial enough. Connections must be tight and must handle the motor current, 3-4 amps. Your end of cycle buzzer will not work nor will the finish guard feature if your dryer has that function.
