When the dryer is on it emits a squeal or squeak at regular intervals, about 1 per second. Any guidance on what to check once I have the cover off? It's hard to tell if it is coming from the front or rear of the machine.

you won't be able to tell anything from the top. you need to remove the front. it is probably the idler pulley or one of the rollers. once the front is removed, you can access the idler pulley. remove it, if you spin it and you feel any kind of drag; that is the culprit. if not, spin each of the rollers; the same goes for them.
