I have been dealing with an odd issue on my Kenmore dryer.

The timer knob didn't advance. I did some research and was told that I needed to replace the timer control unit. I did that. It did not fix the problem.

I researched further and downloaded a wiring diagram, checked voltages and resistance according to several posts. I checked for a "Grounded Element" and found that it was fine. I checked the dryness sensor for continuity. It was fine. I checked for broken thermostats by testing a continuity as well as a heat test in the stove. They were fine. There was a small rattle in the Control Thermostat (with 4 contacts), so I purchased a new one, just in case. None of this has solved the problem.

The problem is:

  • The timer will advance in the timed, heated mode ONLY, but will not shut off.
  • The auto cycles (Permanent Press and Knit/Delicate) won't move the dial at all.
  • The timed, no heat cycle does not advance either.
The dryer heats just fine and dries clothes, but we cannot toss in a load and leave because it will continue to run and never stops rotating the drum. The heat will eventually stop, but the dryer continues to rotate.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is it likely that I have received a defective replacement timer?

Sounds like a bad power resistor. Follow the orange wire from the timer OR terminal. Resistor may be mounted at push to start button. Replacement resistor is different and gets installed in line with the wiring. Comes with instructions.

BTW, this dryer does not have a "dryness" sensor, so I don't know what you were checking.

Thanks!

It looks as though I was testing the Thermal Fuse. I thought it to be a dryness sensor of some sort. Still, it had continuity across. I'll check the Power Resister. Thanks again.
