Default Dryer goes off and on
Model Number: 110. 66912690   Brand: Kenmore   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

Clothes dryer gets hot and spins fine. But it turns itself off randomly (especially after opening the door to check clothes, but also at other times) and then will turn itself back on randomly. I suspect a bad door switch, but a couple things make me wonder: (1) I have not been able to catch the door switch malfunctioning with a multimeter. (2) More importantly, sometimes it'll be running, I check the clothes, then it won't run. But when I close the door, the machine will buzz for a second, then do nothing. This makes me think that the switch is working (since the machine registered a change) and the problem is somewhere else.

Any thoughts?

Can't find wiring diagram for that model. If you can provide photo of it, that would help. Should be inside control panel. It's relatively easy to jump out the door switch to determine if that is the problem. Could also be a bad timer, bad connection at motor or loose connection somewhere. When it shuts off in timed dry, does the timer continue to advance?

Yes. The timer continues to advance. Sometimes it'll beep when the timer is off. Usually it goes back on before the end of the cycle. (Actually, it probably completes most cycles without stopping. It's just that the stopping is annoying.) I'll look for the wiring diagram.

Default Here is the wiring diagram

Some glare, but I think you should be able to make it out. Thanks.

If the motor randomly shuts off while in timed dry and the timer continues to advance with motor off, then the door switch is good. If the door switch was failing, in addition to the motor stopping, the start relay would also release so the motor would not be able to start again on it's own, you would have to press the start button. Anytime you open the door, the motor should shut off and you should have to close the door and press the start button to get it running again. You may have an intermittent belt switch, loose connection at the belt switch or loose connection at the thermal fuse. Either one of these problems could cause the motor to stop but the start relay will remain engaged so that the motor could start again if the faulty connection started working again. Check connections at belt switch and thermal fuse. You can also temporarily bypass these as a test to determine if one of them is the problem.

I'll look it over and report back. Not sure if I'll be able to do it today.
