We have a GE electric tumble dryer. when pressing the start button the dryer will hum and not tumble. If I turn the drum by hand, close the door and push start, it works.

from what I've been reading it is either the motor or starter capacitor. how do I determine which, and how much are the replacement parts for both?

if it's neither, any suggestions on what the issue may be? please help:(

Here are your parts

Your model number seems to be missing several digits at the end of it.
Choose the correct one from the Matching Model Numbers.
Odds are that the motor will be the same for all units in this series but I cannot guarantee that.

I do not see a capacitor used with this motor, so it will be the motor.

Looks like about $100.00

Odds are very high that it is the motor since the drum does turn OK manually

Before ordering anything I would open the unit up and check the belt, all internal seals, rear drum support etc. Since you have to tear it apart, you may as well give it an overhaul. If the unit needs a lot of other parts it may not be worth fixing

Also this is a good time to check/clean your vent system.
