Hi. I have a Kenmore electric dryer that dries fine but will not stop because the timer is not advancing. Even when set on Timed Dry, it will not advance. I can rotate the dial fine. It appears to use the #3976576 timer.

I was wondering how can I test to be sure that the timer is bad?

Is it possible that one of the sensors, like the dryness sensor, is bad and would cause the timer to not advance? If so, how can I test this?

Thank you

Here are your parts
Parts for Kenmore Dryer 11060812990 - AppliancePartsPros.com

The timer is
Part number: AP3100522

Part number: AP3100522

Click on the picture for more info about the timer.

I was wondering how can I test to be sure that the timer is bad?

You could test the power across the timer motor. If you have 120 volts and the timer does not advance then it is toast.
Use timed dry when testing.
Also the dryer should be running.

I cannot find a wiring diagram for this unit.
Do you have it?
Often it is stored in the control console.
It is important because on many dryers the power to the timer motor also runs through a set of contacts in the timer.

Be very careful when doing this as there is 240 volts at the timer and it is lethal!!!

Is it possible that one of the sensors, like the dryness sensor, is bad and would cause the timer to not advance? If so, how can I test this?
Not very likely as on most dryers the power to the timer is direct when in timed dry.

Thank you for the reply. I tested the voltage across the timer motor during timed dry and it is receiving 120 V, but not advancing. So I assume the motor in the timer is bad, and I need to replace the timer. I do have the wiring diagram. If you still need it I can upload it, but I assume you don't since the motor is almost certainly the problem.

*EDIT*

After I get this timer fixed, what sort of routine maintenance should I be performing on the dryer? The dryer came with the purchase of a house—is there anything I can do to check that it is in good working order?

About the only routine maintenance is to check/clean your vent system every year or so.

If you do have a problem that requires you to open up the main cabinet of the unit then check things like the belt, the drum seals, the rear and front drum supports/glides/rollers, the idler wheel, etc.
Also clean the interior including the blower wheel.
Basically give it an overhaul.

Thank you for the help. I bought and installed a new timer and the dryer is now working perfectly. I will also be cleaning out the vent system soon. Thank you again for the help.

You are welcome

And thanks for getting back to us. Now when others search for a similar problem they will see what actually worked instead of just suggestions about what could be the cause.
