I want to try to replace the Maytag DG309 Gas Dryer Gas Solenoids. I tried to take them apart to see if I could do the job. I took the bracket off the left side solenoids. There are 2 solenoids on this side, stack on top of each other, with a shaft through them. There was also a small black washer with them. I'm not sure of where it goes. I tried putting underneath the bottom solenoid, but then the bracket doesn't fit back on correctly. Does it go between the two solenoids? I would appreciate any help on this. I haven't ordered them yet. I first wanted to see if I could do the job myself. Thanks.

Hi.
The black o-ring goes first on the shaft, then the metal plate, then the coils. Are sure you need the new coils? What was the original problem and symptoms?
Simon.

My problem with the dryer was that it would go on normally and then after five minutes the flame would go off. In about 1 or 2 minutes after that, the igniter would glow red or orange, but the burner would not ignite and the igniter would turn off. I think it would glow and again the burner wouldn't ignite. The cycle would repeat itself. I looked online and based on the symptoms, it should be the solenoid. Does does make sense to you? Or could it be something else.

I have another question. On the right shaft, that is attached to the gas valve assembly, I may have pulled on it a bit, thinking I could get if off. It seems to be attached to the assembly with a spring. It didn't come off, but my pulling did move it up maybe a 1/2" at the most. It sprung right back into place. Would this have damaged anything or affect the operation once I replace the solenoids?

No, as long there is no gas leak.

Would I need to check for a gas leak after the solenoids have been replaced? Where do I check for the leak and how? Is it a matter of smelling for gas?

Check around the shafts. You will smell the gas if it leaks.
