My Maytag dryer lights up when power is pushed. When start button is pushed a faint hum is heard and heating element can be seen in back getting red hot but control panel says sensing and will not start. Belt is ok and motor is not running. Ideas where to start greatly appreciated.

Hello,

You may want to start the troubleshooting from testing the heating element. Remove the wires from the heating element terminals and check for continuity between each terminal and the ground.

If there is continuity, replace the heating element.

If there is no continuity, replace the motor.

Gene IAW your guidance i replaced the heating element but now the control panel still lights up and will change appropriately but now the heating element does not come on at all nor is there any buzz as before. The drum light comes on when the button is pushed and the door switch has tension and depressing it will turn the light off. Before i replace the motor is there anything else that might cause this problem like thermal fuse, high limit switch, thermister? We live in a semi-rural area and get our power from a rural coop. A few weeks ago i had to replace the control panel on the matching washer. I appreciate any guidance. I'm basing my questions on the other posts that i've read. Thank you

Replacing the heating element without testing the old part for continuity does not do any good because we still don't know the real cause of the original problem.

Perform the diagnostic as instructed in the attached tech sheet, starting from "Motor, heater and console ID" on page 2. Do not replace any parts yet and post the results. The simple multimeter Part number: AP5641751
Part number: AP5641751
or any other similar to it will be needed.

Gene.
